Phoenix Design
Company Information
Phoenix England, a division of F&L (UK) Ltd was founded by the designer maker Fei Liu, who has a reputation for producing innovative, fashionable, contemporary jewellery for men and women. Phoenix England aims to integrate the diverse cultures of the Far East and the West, in their products in a modern sculptural style.
Inspired by architectural forms, Fei Liu developed a range of designs that required precise manufacturing techniques. The designs would have been difficult to hand make as master patterns.
Brief
As these designs were more suitable for CAD/CAM as a method of production, Fei approached the JIIC for assistance to develop this new product range and to explore Rapid Manufacturing techniques. The JIIC CAD team were briefed to work with him to provide access to CAD/CAM, RP and Casting facilities in order to achieve precise master models that were faithful to his designs.
Impact
- CAD/CAM and rapid manufacturing technologies have enabled the realisation of the designs and productivity was hugely improved.
- These products were winning entrants in two national competitions, namely the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths' Craftsmanship & Design Award 2006 (Silver Award) and first prize in the Kayman Award 2007.
- A selection of the product range is now selling at prestigious retail outlets in Selfridges London, Galeries Lafayette Paris, and Takashimaya Tokyo.
- The assistance from JIIC has helped the business grow, increased sales and created a new employment opportunity within the company.
A long-term relationship between Fei Liu and the JIIC has been established and currently a new project is being undertaken with Phoenix Design, a division of F&L (UK) Ltd.
