Following an introduction to the Rapid Prototyping (RP) machines and CAD programmes used at the Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC) we consider a small number of relevant case studies.

The industry leading research conducted for these projects reflect the novel applications of RP technology within and beyond the jewellery industry.

The examples reported include a project incorporating the Solidscape Thermal Phase Change Inkjet printing process to generate a series of casting master patterns for the 'lost wax’ casting control process whilst maintaining absolute control over size and weight specifications. Other cases include reference to the Envisiontec Perfactory process to show how to develop unique castings. Finally, there is the illustration of the Objet Tempo PolyJet process to supplement an existing craft skill. It will show the scanning of a hand carved wax, which can then be reversed and built on the Objet machine 10% larger to allow the craftsman to use his skills to carve back to the finished master pattern.
